Coupons for Farm Meat

“It now becomes necessary for the farmer who normally kills or intends to kill part or the whole of the meat required for his household consumption, including casual killings, or who receives meat from another farmer under a sharing arrangement and desires to continue this practice, to hand in to his nearest rationing office all meat coupons in the possession of himself, his family, and his employees,” said the rationing controller, Mr. J. E. Thomas, commenting on a notice recently gazetted under the Rationing Emergency Regulations. “In exchange for each sheet of coupons the farmer will receive a form consisting of a deposit slip and a permit. The permit is to be handed to any butcher w r ho will then supply the farmer with meat required, over and aoove tut farm killings, though, of course, the meat supplied by the butcher each week on each permit must not exceed the ration. When a farmer desires to obtain meals away from home, he can, upon presentation of the deposit slip at any rationing office, obtain sufficient meat coupons to cover his hotel and restaurant meals. “It is also necessary for any farmers participating in a sharing arrangement to make written application to the rationing controller, Wellington, for authority to continue such an arrangement. Authority will be forthcoming in all cases where the arrangement has been operating for 12 months or more; other cases will be dealt with on their merits. / “The farmer who intends obtaining his meat supplies from a retail butcher and also ‘country consumers securing their meat by rail or service car delivery, are advised to participate in this scheme also,” said Mr. Thomas. “In the past, considerable inconvenience has been experienced by farmers and certain country butchers owing to their infrequent visits to town. Under the new system, they can deposit the permit with their butcher, who will then supply the weekly ration of meat as required.”
