The War and the Soil
In U.S.A. soil conservation measures have become a powerful weapon of war, states a communication received by the Forest and Bird Protection Society, and a detailed survey has revealed that they are without doubt directly responsible for a 20 per cent, increase in production. At the present time there are 59 major land measures in use for making the best use of land, protecting it against erosion, and conserving water resources. In 10 years erosion has been controlled on sixty million acres and a further sixty million acres are mapped for immediate treatment. Two and a half million farms are actively engaged in the application of the principles of soil conservation. By special arrangement Reuter’s world service, in addition to other special compilation of overseas intelligence published in this issue, and all rights therein in Australia and New Zealand avo reserved.
