New Zealander Leads Allied Air Taxi Service
Received Tuesday, 11.50 p.m. LONDON, May 30. High-ranking Allied officers concerned with the planning of operations in Europe are making increasing use of the aerial taxi service in the Second Tactical Air Force, says the Air Min istry News Service. The service was organised and commanded by Squadron Leader Geoffrey Pannell, aged 28, of Canterbury, who was a sheep fanner before joining the R.N.Z.A.F. four years ago. Squadron Leader Pannell recalls that he once had to fly General Ander son through heavy rain and poor visibility when the conditions were particularly hazardous. He was peering anxiously downward fearing that a hill might loom up. “I looked round to see how General Anderdson was reacting, but ho was looking about him calmly as if riding in a car on a good day. Apparently he knew nothing of the qualms 1 felt.”
