Received Monday, 11.30 p.m. CHUNGKING, May 29. Monsoon-like rains hindered operations in the Salween area on Saturday and Sunday, states a Chinese communique. The Chinese, overcoming minefields by herding cattle ahead, crossed towering cloud-enveloped Kaolikuug Mountains and penetrated the outposts of the strong positions taken up by the Japanese garrison which escaped from Tatengtzu. Reports indicate that Cie Japanese suffered 1000 casualties around Tatangtsu. The Japanese overcame the small Chinese garrison at Xfautn, 14 miles northeast of HimgnuShll. Overcoming the handicap of incessant rain and soupy mud Chinese troops drove forward a mile and a naif against determined Japanese resistance into the southern outskirts of Myitkyina, reports the American United Fress’s correspondent at General Stilwell’s headquarters in North Burma. Other units attacked from the west sido of the city and gained 1000 yards. In the Mogaung-Kamaing area the fall of Kamaing is believed to be near. One Chinese column advanced 2000 yards down the Mogaung River and is attacking Kamaing from the north. A Chungking message states that despite continuous rains the Chinese pursuit of the Japanese on the Yunnan front continues. The Chinese troops have now reached a point barely ten miles from the Burma Road. General Stilwell’s Chinese-American troops penetrated the Myitkyina south west sector and another unit is ad vanc’ng from fe southeast. Japanese counterattacks from tho west suffered heavily.
