CITIZENS’ TICKET WINS THE DAY

Labour Well Behind in Palmerston North The local body elections in Palmerston North on Saturday resulted in a decisive win for the Citizens’ ticket, Labour running well behind. There was a good poll considering the boisterous and wet nature of the day. Electors number between 15,000 and 16,000 so that somewhere about 50 per cent, braved the elements. The day was one where cars were badly needed to get elderly people to the polling booths and no doubt the petrol restrictions were largely responsible for many not being able to vote. Considering the large number of nominees for the City Council election, the percentage of informal votes was relatively small. Some of these may yet be allowed if the returning officer, Mr. J. R. Hardie, is of opinion that they clearly indicate the intention of the voters. One elector ran the blue pencil through the whole issue while another wrote a not altogether pleasant epithet across the sheet. The Wellington Harbour Board poll is not yet complete, some of the district returns having not been received by last evening. In the City Council election a feature was the defeat of two sitting members, Crs. T. E, Lees and E. H. Smith, who were not on the Citizens’ ticket. Details are as follows:
