Chinese Counterattacks Progressing
Received Sunday, 8.20 p.m. LONDON, May 28. Chinese forces counterattacking in the Loyang sector have further progressed on all routes, particularly In the area east of Luchih In Weetem Yunnan. They recaptured all tho heights north and eouth of Lengihul* kow. General Stllwell’e communique states that Chinese-American aircraft on Friday inflicted many casualties on Japanese in the vicinity of Loyang. At least 30 trucks were destroyed. A small vessel southeast of Hongkong was damaged and si* troop-laden Yangtse River boats were set on Are. Many casualties were inflicted on enemy troops near Shansi. Planes also set Are to a supply dump In Shanhsien and strafed Installations at Pinglu. One aircraft is missing from these operaA Chinese air communique reports that Chinese American planes bombed and strafed Japanese barracks at Slnyang. Planes also destroyed eight railcars and two trucks south of the city. Chinese Bombers attacked factories at Maotsintu on the Yellow Blver while other planes hit troop-carrying trucks on Honan Plain. Radio contact with Loyang waa broken yesterday, and a Chinese army spokesman says that the city has probably fallen. On the Salween front, the Chinese have reached a point 2fi miles from Lungling- The previous claim that the Chinese had cut the Burma Road south of Lungling was incorrect. A transmission mistake gave the village recaptured as Chef.ang, whereas Chlfang, northeast of Tengchung, was the village taken. Liberators sank two cargo vessels totalling 3900 tons off Sam&h Bay. at tho southern tip of Hainan Island, yesterday. General Stilwell’i communique adds: ‘Other planes bombed and strafed bridges and enemy installations in Thailand, Trench Indo-Chlna, and on the Yangtse River.
