£lOl a Bottle
BEER BREWED BY A KING
Five Glasgow returned prisoners of war shared a bottle of ale brewed by King Edward VIL in 1902 Tho beer was auctioned for the Red Cross, and was knocked down for £lOl to antique dealer, John Rushmer. Announcing that servicemen would drink the beer, Rushmer invited the five repatriates and their wives and sweethearts *>
dinner, where he poured the king’s ale into 18th Century hand-cut burgundy glasses. The guests drank a toast to victory, and Rushmer gave the glasses to the men as a homecoming souvenir.
