Obituary

There passed away recently a former well-known and highly respected resident of Palmerston North, and one associated with the early days of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, in the -person of Mrs J. E. Vernon, widow of the first Hector of the School. Born in Dunedin, Mrs Vernon, prior to her marriage, was a member of a well-known Anderson’s Bay (Dunedin) family, being a daughter of the late Air and Mrs Somerville. With her husband Mrs Vernon came to Palmerston North in August, 1902. She was well-known to all the old pupils of the school, especially those who lived at College House, which was under the joint management of Mr and Mrs Vernon. Being of a kindly nature and a generous disposition Mrs Vernon made many friends in the city. She was also an energetic worker of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and was particularly interested in the women’s organisations. In .1912 Mr and Mrs Vernon visited England and the Continent returning in 19115. After the death of her husband in 1918 Mrs Vernon went to live in Auckland. Later she again visited England and for a number of years lived there with her sons, Mr W. S. Vernon and Dr. T. K. Vernon. On her return she resided with Mr J. D. Vernon in Auckland, at whose home she died. She is survived by her three sons— Messrs J. D. Vernon, W. S. Vernon (Cardiff, Wales), and Dr. T. B. Vernon (Auckland). Mrs Vernon was laid to rest beside her husband in the Terrace End Cemetery, following a short service in St. Andrew’s Church.
