Shearing and Harvesting In Hawke's Bay
Definite reports have been received by the Dannevirke and District Primary Production Council that shearing in Southern Hawke s Bay has progressed very satisfactorily, owing to the arrangements made by the Council in conjunction with the contract and other shearers. The run of fine weather has considerably helped matters, and also the shearers have been most considerate in working in with the Production Council’s arrangements in order that farmers could have their work done expeditiously without any undue overlapping. The shearers who were released from camp to do shearing work have worked well. Some farmers have had reason to complain because of arrangements not being complied with. The Council will have a further meeting with the shearers’ committee as soon as possible so that any suggestions and recommendations for the next season may be considered. As far as the harvesting work is concerned the arrangements made by the Production Council and the Army Office have worked well) and farmers report that on the whole men released from the Army for this necessary work have done a good job. A few farmers have been disappointed because they never made application within the prescribed time, but even these urgent cases have been met as far as possible, and Sergeant-Major Biel, of the Army Office, has done a good job in arranging for the men to be placed on the farms as required. In connection with the further appeal to be made for increased production, it is likely that Hon. Ben Roberts, Minister of Agriculture, will meet the Production Council and the Farmers’ Union near the end of January, so that the farmers in this district may bo advised of the exact requirements of tho Government and in particular the push for increased meat supplies.
