Information has been received of the promotion of Flight Lieutenant E. W. Barnett to the rank of Squadrou Leader.

Mr. J. Callcsen, of Karere, chairman of the Mannwatu-Oroua River Board, has returned home from hospital, where he was obliged to undergo a minor operation. District traffic manager of railways at Wanganui siucc February, 1940, Mr. A. J. Pritchard will retire on superannuation on Saturday next. He has completed 42 years with the department and his retirement is necessitated by' health reasons, following service in the war of 1914-18. He is well liked and respected in Wanganui and district and has won the esteem of staffs and clients of the department.

Well known in the Waikato district, Mr. R. C. Saxon, of Morrinsville, has died at the age of 02 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Saxon was born in Foilding and farmed at Levin and Te Kuiti before going to the Waikato in 1918. In his younger days he was interested in sport, and played football and hockey for Levin. Mr. Saxon was a frequent exhibitor at agricultural shows, and for several years was vicepresidont of the Morrinsville A. and P. Society. He is survived wife. A well known member of the banking profession, Mr. J. A. West, manager of the National Bank in Palmerston North, has received notification of his transfer on promotion to the position of inspector at the general manager's office in Wellington. Mr. West has been manager of the local branch since 1937 and has made many friends in the city who will wish him well in his new position. Mr. W. L. Booth, at present manager of the Whangarei branch, will succeed Mr. West in Palmerston North and he will take over his new duties early in November.
