Feilding Live Stock Sale

VERY KEEN DEMAND FOR BEEF HIGHEST PRICES RECORDED FOR YEARS The highest prices recorded for years were noted at yesterday’s Feilding live stock sale in tin* fat cattle yards where there was a very keen demand for all classes. Actually the prices wer| comparable with those that ruled away back in the boom years immediately following the Armistice of tho Great War. But different influences are operating this year. There is a real shortage of beef due to the generally bad season on the East Coast and the demands of the fighting services. The cattle are not available and considerable difficulty is being experienced by butchers to secure sufficient to meet consumer’s demands. Very firm competition is accordingly pushing up the price. Yesterday’s top price for bollocks was £2O 17s 6d, which was paid for a peu of 6 cattle. About eight trucks of bullocks were disposed of and several trucks of female station cattle which sold up to £l4 I2s 6d were disposed of. Competition was also offering for ex-dairy sorts which sold readily. In the fat sheep sections, mutton values remained steady, but prime wethers were dearer at 4(5s Id for the very limited offering. Store sheep sold well on a firm market and a good sale was* recorded in the dairy section. Very little business was done in the case of station cattle, but one sale of a pen of .10 forward AA. Hereford cross bullocks at £l3 10s indicated the trend of the market for good steers. Fat Sheep

A yarding of 1100 fat sheep comprising under 50 wethers, GOO ewes and about 460 hoggets experienced a good sale at rates equal to those prevailing

last week. Good meaty ewes changed hands at slightly over 30s and good hoggets made over 355, these values reflecting no change. Wethers were in very short supply and the sales indicated that prime sorts were slightly dearer at 46s Id. The realisations were:—Wethers: 7 at 46s Id; 2 at 45s 10d; 8 at 38s lOd; 3 at 36s 4d; 9 at 34s 7d; 7 at 34s Id; ewes: 25 at 23s 4d; 7 at 21s lOd; 16 at 25s Id; 17 at 25s Id; 9 at 21s 4d; 17 at 29s 7d; 5S at 28s 4d; 9 at 20s Id; 30 at 23s lOd; 12 at 22s

Store Sheep Hoggets predominated in the store sheep section and quality pens commanded slightly higher rates on a firm market. The sales included the following:—Wether hoggets: 85 at 23s 2d; 43 at 27s Id; 71 at 14s Id; 24 at 21s 6d; 44 at 20s-; 77 at 24s fid; 60 at ISs; 50 at 13s; 128 at 18s; 11S at 20s lOd; 20 at 28s; ewe hoggets; 59 at 25s 3d; 31 at 15s 3d; 30 at 19s 9d; 140 at 245; 74 at 24s 4d; 75 at 18s 3d; 60 at 28s 9d; blackface hoggets: 80 at 17s 3d; 58 at Ss 8d; 91 at 21s Sd; 92 at 23s Id; 10 at 110 s 9d; 16 at 19s 3d; ewes with lambs at foot: 17 at 14s all counted; 41 at 13s Id; 76 at 16s Id. Fat Cattle Beef was definitely dearer, the competition, prompted by the widespread shortage, pushing prices up for cattle hardly to be described as finished. This extraordinary demand for all classes of beef has witnessed considerable early drafting and early spring months rarely see such yardings especially of station bred ox beef. The top price yesterday was £2O 17s fid paid for a pen of 8 bullocks. Other sales of bullocks were: 8 at £ls 17s fid; 4 at £l4s 7s 6d; 11 at £l6 17s fid; 8 at £lB 12s 6d; S at £l7 17s fid; 8 at £lB 17s fid; 8 at £l7 12s fid; sales of light heifers were made at the following figures: 10 at £l3 7s fid; 9 at £l3 2s fid; 9 at £ll 2s fid; 9 at £lO 17s fid; cows sold from £lO 7s fid to £l4 12s fid; exdairy cattle sold readily under firm competition with realisations ranging from £7 2s fid up to £l4 12s fid and for heifers up to £ll 2s r (sd. The market was brisk throughout and attracted a large bench of operators from outside districts. Station Cattle Very little business was done under the hammer for the small offering of station cattle, but the market was very firm for those recorded sales under competition. A pen of AA. Hereford cross forward steers changed hands at £l3 10s. For a pen of empty A.A. cows, £6 ISs.,was paid and 2-yr. heifers made £6.
