PALMERSTON NORTH BRANCH Mrs. B. A. Bond (Rongiotu) was in the chair at the September meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the W.D.F.U. yesterday, cordially welcoming members and visitors. The president reported on the recent visit of Miss Cocks Johnston, garden tutor, and the appreciation ot , members on the information gleaned, j Assistance to two deserving cases was endorsed oh information received from the president and acting secretary, Mrs. J. Mrs. Montgomery reported on the meeting called .ler the auspices ot the National Counci'of Women to arrange for a suitable celebration in Pal- . merston North to mark the golden jubilee lof women’s franchise, Mrs. W. F. Field j reporting on a further meeting. An ap- ! peal was made for names of women who | exercised the right to vote in 1894, also for names of women who had received any decoration for public service. A cardigan donated by Mrs. Gardener for competition was won by Mrs. J. McMahon (Fitzherbert), the amount of £1 13s being added to the funds. Mrs. I. Wilton wrote in appreciation of sympathy received in her recent bereavement, and there were letters of thanks for parcels and gifts from men of the Services overseas, Mrs. Montgomery said there was little activity in the sewing circle owing to sickness and holidays, and sne further reported on the competition for woollen goods made from home-spun wool held at the Wellington Central Provincial. There had been over 200 entries of a very high standard, Palmerston North gaining two prizes, and the display created tremendous interest. Miss M. Matheson (secretary) forwarded a report on hospital visiting by Mesdames Eaton, Gooding and Taylor, mentioning that she herselt had been unable to do any visiting for the past six weeks. She also touched on the work of the Division dressmaker in the district. Mrs. Russell presented a comprehensive report on the recent meeting of the Wellington Central Provincial and was accorded a vote of thanks. Two visitors, Mesdames Goulter, of Fairlie, and McAulay (Nelson) spoke briefly ot their own branch activities, the latter returning thanks for the kindly welcome extended to them. Suggestions put forward by Mesdames Montgomery and Field for members to visit the Rest Home to demonstrate crafts or to arrange for speakers or entertainment in some form or other, were warmly approved. Mrs. Millard’s offer to demonstrate tatting and Mrs. Murray’s offer to visit were gratefully accepted.
