Pope Asks for Worthy Peace

LONDON, Sept. 1. Calling on the world’s leaders to reach & just peace, the Pope expressed his hope and faith that 1943 would see the end of the war and the dawn of a new peace.

The Pope, who was broadcasting to the world over the Vatican radio, said: “The war seems to be reaching its culmination and people everywhere are revolting against violence, doubting whether the continuance of such a war is justifiable. We say to those whose task it is to promote means of peace ‘Do not destroy or darken the aspiramou to peace into acts which etir up

hatred and encourage resistance. Give all nations a foundation of a worthy peace. People everywhere want peace, bread, and work.' ” According to the Berlin radio, Cardinal Enrico Galeazzi, a personal friend of the Pope and General Governor ot Vatican City, who arrived in Lisbon yesterday, is en route to Washington as a special envoy from the Holy See. “Vatican circles,” the radio says, “believe that he is carrying a private message from the Pope to President Roosevelt.
