Automobile Association

A special meeting of the Manawatu i Automobile Association was held on Tuesday night, Mr. W. 11. Brown presiding, in order to discuss a motion, of,l which notice had been given, regarding , an alteration to rule 12 (g), which deals of other members by any candidate for I election to any office in ihc association. The notice of motion asked that rule 12 tgj be deleted and a rule be substituted stating that no candidate for election, | between the date ot nomination and the t date of an election, should, directly «»i 1 indirectly, canvass for the support of any member of the association, the penalty being disqualification from election. The only exceptions to this would be a simple request for support made by the candidate orally and in person, or a statement submitted to the returning officer, voting papers. An alteration was agreed upon to the motion, clarifying the association’s position in the event qf any erroneous or libellous matter being submitted in the statements mentioned I above. Mr. I=l. R. B. Holben moved an. amendment that rule 12 (g) simply be deleted, and after some discussion this was car- | ried. A further amendment was then brought forward by Mr. Brown, that the follow- j ing be substituted for rule 12 (g): “A | candidate at the time his or her nomination is received by the association may furnish the returning officer with a state- | ment of not more than 200 words setting out his or her position, experience, qualifications, length of membership, and views on matters affecting the association: such statement (if the number of candidates exceed the vacancies) to be circulated to members with the voting papers.” This was agreed to.
