Eight German Fighters Shot Down in Sweep Over France

LONDON, July 6. Spitfires shot down eight German fighters in sweeps along the French coast to-day without loss to themselves. Seven enemy aircraft fell to the pilots of a Canadian and Polish wing. Many Spitfires were taking part in a sweep from Dieppe to Dunkirk and several miles inland. One wing penetrated deeply over France without seeing a fighter, but the Canadian and Polish wing found a mixed formation of Messerschmitts ana Focke Wulfs. The Poles shot down five and the Canadians two. One Canadian’s engine failed just after he had shot down a Gorman. He decided to glide home, and to avoia losing height took a straight line through intense antiaircraft fire over Boulogne. He got through unhurt ana landed in England after a 30-mile glide. It is officially stated: “This evening two enemy fighters flew over a district of East Anglia for a short time. At one place a small number of people were injured by machine-gun fire.”
