Fanning Statistics
The agricultural and pastoral statistics compiled by the Department of Agriculture for the year 1941-42 provide interesting reading. The counties of Rangitikei, Kiwitea, Pohangina, Oroua, Manawatu, Kairanga and Manawatu appear in the Wellington laud district and Woodvillc in the Hawke’s Bay district.
With a total of 5418 horses the Rangitikei County ranks fourth in New Zealand, this only being exceeded by Southland (which is well in front with
l total of 17,254), Ashburton and lawke’s Bay in that order. Pohangina, vith 849, is the lowest of the counties idjacent to Palmerston North.
In the cattle raising industry Rangitikei again is well to the fore, on this occasion occupying fifth place for the Dominion. The leading county is Piako, in the Auckland district, which has 160,495. Piako is followed by Waikato, Matamata and Whangarei, then comes Rangitikei. For dairy cows in milk Horowhenun is in 15th position. Piako again finishes in first place on this occasion with 95,231 as against Horowhenua’s 34,146.
With a total of 1,367,238 sheep Rangitikei is second only to Southland which has 1,935,146. Next comes Hawke’s Bay with 1,279,512. Of the remaining counties none comes anywhere near the leading totals. The following tables show the numbers iu the different sections of stock in counties adjacent to Palmerston North:
