Rongotea

(From our Own Correspondent.) Mr. E. N. Rowe presided at the annual meeting of the R.S.A. Members stood in silence as a tribute to the memory of the late Mr. P. Vallender, father of Mr. E. Vallender, who has recently returrned from the fighting in the Middle East. Mr. Rowe reported on the activities of the branch during the year, ’while the financial statement, presented by Mr. Dafter showed a credit of £S 6s. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. E. N. Rowe, vicepresident, Mr. N. Remnant; secretarytrCasurer, Mr. J. Dafter; committee, Messrs. H. J. Claasen, S. Wood, G. Wenborn, C. Eichler, A. Saunders, R. Glasgow, A. E. Parker; card committee, Messrs. T. Dyer, J. Mearns, S. Wood. It was decided to hold the ladies’ evening on Tuesday, May 4, and the annual reunion on June 1. Poppies have not yet come to hand, but Poppy Day will be held as soon as they arrive. The usual arrangements were made for Anzac Day observance, Mr. W. Foster to be in charge of the parade. Messrs A. Dear, E. Vallender and S. Gledhill were nominated for membership. There was a capacity house to enjoy a varied concert programme provided by school children of the district. Waitohi, Glen Oroua and Rongotea Schools all contributed items, assisted by pupils of Mrs. D. Rowe and Miss D. Matheson. The chairman of the Social Club, Mr. W. Amey, made a presentation to Private Duncan Fraser, who is home on leave, extending to him the best wishes of the residents of the districts. The items were as follows:—Pianoforte trios, Misses Beryl, Avis, Dorothy Lind and D. Matheson, M. Luxford and M. Hintz; pianoforte duet, Shirley Mossop and Prue Amey; recitations, Rita Wallace and Tom Clark; groups of folk dances by pupils of Waitohi School; playette, produced by Mrs. D. Rowe: humorous sketch, Rongotea School; play, Glen Oroua School; and unison and part songs by Rongotea schoolgirls. The funds of the W.D.F.U. for the assistance of countrywomen should benefit considerably by the entertainment. There was only a small attendance at the monthly meeting of the W.D.F.U. presided over by Mrs. N. F. Rowe. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. P. Vallender, members standing in silence. A donation of £lO was made towards the W.D.F.U. Rest Home, to go to the fund for purchasing a refrigerator and the cost of painting the. building. A new member, Mrs. J. Miller, was welcomed. Letters of appreciation for parcels received were read from Pte. R. Hill and Driver Frank Luxford. It was decided to invite Miss Cox-Johnston to give a lecture. Mrs. A. Hill was appointed to act as a co-trustee for the Savings Bank Account As next month is the annual meeting an executive member is to be asked to attend. An article on First Aid was read by Mrs. N. F. Rowe. The hostesses were Mesdames D. B. Rowe, E. N. Rowe, A. Fleming and Miss A. Hunt.
