Commonwealth Party Wins British By-election
VOTE FOR GREAT PROGRAMME OF SOCIAL REFORM. Received Friday 10.10 p.m. LONDON, April 8. Warrant Officer John Loverseed, who won the Eddisbury by-election, is in his early thirties. He is the first Commonwealth Party member to win a seat. Loverseed was a pilot in the Battle for Britain and he flew In Spain on the Republican side. His election slogan was that every vote for him was a vote for the Beveridge report. He advocates national ownership of the land, coal, electricity, transport and the iron and steel industries. Formed last July the Commonwealth Party has contested five by-elections. Tbe Times, In a leading article, says: “Warrant Officer Loverseed is a gallant, earnest and sincere young man with a simple and direct programme. He put winning the war before all else, yet claimed priority for a political and social progress policy with a positive appeal and won the day. His victory Is not a vote ol hostility to the Prime Minister who is completely indentified with the active prosecution of the war. But rather a call which cannot safely be neglected for prompt and unequivocal measure, to give effect to the great programme of social reform embodied iu the series of reports to tbe Government and Mr. Churchill’s broadcasts.
