Makerua Drainage

A desire by a number of ratepayers in the Makerua Drainage Board’s district to raise a loan for the purchase and installation of two pumping plants, again came before the Board yesterday. These ratepayers are in the central area and are prepared t,u be rated specially to meet the cost—that is, all except some objectors who placed their case before the Magistrate on February 18. The cases were adjourned sine die because of a possibility of an amicable working ar--1 rangement being come to. The Board is being asked to approve of the fallowing: The boundary drain is to have the fall taken up for about 27 chains to a point between the boundary of Boswell’s and Neame’s lands. A connecting drain is to be made at this point between the boundary drain and the middle drain which runs through the farms fronting Ashlea Road, to a size decided by the Board’s engineer. The Board is to make an inspection of the locality on Monday, following which there will be a special meeting held to discuss the position. Hon. R. Semple, writing as Minister of Public Works, advised that he had made a personal examination of the willows near the Tokomaru stream and the erosion of the stop bank along the Mangaore stream. He had asked a departmental engineer to furnish him with a report. The financial statement showed a credit of £693 7s 7d compared with £856 Os lOd at the same time last year. Of (he current year’s rates of £12,432 16s 3d, 75.23 per cent, had been paid, namely. £9353 15s 9d.
