Pay for-Sick Servicemen

In future, said tho Acting Minister of Defence (Mr. Eraser) to-night for tho duration of tho war all members of tho forces who served in Now Zealand or overseas and arc in-patients or outpatients of hospitals will continue on full pay and allowances until (a) they have been discharged from the army as fit to tako up civil employment or (b) granted discharge from tho army at their own request. When a member is certified by a medical board as unfit for military service and is deemed able to undertake civil employment his army pay and allowances will continue until his case is dealt with by tlie Rehabilitation Board or War Pensions Department. The rehabilitation allowance or pension will commence from the date he is discharged from the army and no member of tho Armed Forces will be prejudiced in any way in claiming tho rehabilitation allowance or pension, but such will not bo paid until the cessation of his military pay and allowances. The present leave privileges will be continued. “No man who served his country and whose health is undermined will suffer a period of serious financial embarrassment while he is in the process of transfer to civil life, said Mr. Fraser. The Government is undertaking to ensure that a reasonable income is granted every man until he is able to tako up civil employment. In unfortunate instances where prolonged hospital treatment is necessary military pay will continue for the duration of the war. Fourteen days’ leave on full pay will now be given to all men demobilised from the home defence forces.
