Loss of Mails by Enemy Action.

The Postmaster-General announces the loss by enemy action of mail comprising I*l bags of letters and other articles and 43 bags of parcels, dispatched from Australia to biew Zealand in January last; also of a small mail from India dispatched In March of last year. Shop Workers Protest. The Dominion Conference of Shop Assistants which met in Wellington, unanimously' passed this motion: —“That this conference desires to record its strong protest against the stabilisation regulations recently issued by the Government, and is strongly of the opinion that the said regulations are quite unwarranted and can have no other effect but. to inflict a tremendous hardship on the workers of this Dominion. ’ ’ Radio Station Guarded. After spending live days on. guard at. the IZB broadcasting studio in Durham .Street West, Auckland, a special uniformed constable was withdrawn on Saturday after an uneventful period of duty. During the time the guard was maintained all doors from the street other than the main entrance were locked. The constable was at first posted in the foyer, from where he could see individuals or groups of visitors, but later he used a uearby room. A number of doors in the building which are usually left unlocked were locked during the .live days, and the staff had to sign for the use of keys. The public was not permitted beyond the ground floor. The period passed without the constable’s services being called on. Intermediate School. Mr. W. H. Brown presided at a meeting of the Intermediate School Committee at which a letter from the Wanganui' Education Board was read, granting approval of a £ for £ subsidy ou the purchase of a motor-mower for the school. Mr Whibley’s report stated that the February educational scheme finished last week, wet weather interfering with its smooth running. It was decided that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. A. Honore, of Tiritea Valley, for his gift of a fleece for the craft classes. The pupils spin the wool, which is passed on to women’s knitting guilds to be made into scarves, gloves, etc., for the Forces. Most of the vegetables in the garden plots have been harvested, it was stated, and the sale of potatoes will provide funds for the purchase of more plants and seeds. During the summer, cabbages, carrots and other vegetables have been supplied to the Emergency Hospital in considerable quantity. Thoso Massey College Rates. ‘ ‘ The Government has given very full consideration to your representations but is not prepared to agree to an\ r variation of the legal exemption from the payment of rates which is common to all Crown lauds.’’ This letter from Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture, received yesterday, was to have given the final K.O. to the Kairanga County Council’s attempt to got the Government to pay rates on Massey Agricultural College lands. The Council, however, is refusing to tako “the count.” It points out that Lincoln College, an institution similar to Massey, pays rates on some of its holdings. The Minister had promised to confer with the School of Agriculture on the subject and the Council wants to know what that body had to say about it. The Minister is to be asked for a more detailed reply and the Council is again protesting that it is unfair that one section of the ratepayers should be penalised for the benefit of the whole community. Mr. D. J. Lattimore, Deputy-Chief Postmaster at Christchurch, lias retired from the Post and Telegraph Department after 43 years’ service. For a time he was stationed in Palmerston North.
