National Club Enters Upon a New Year

Mr. F. L. Cubitt presided over the fourth unuual meeting of the National Club last evening there being a satisfactory attendance, in presenting hij report the president stated that despite the difficulties of buying, and in getting ueip, due to members being busy with war work, the popular and efficient hostess, Mrs. (J. Hayward, had kept tho flag, flying to bring the club through m a satisfactory manner. Thanks were due to Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Mills for running euchre evenings and to the ladies’ committee who managed the bridge afternoons. An outstanding effort on the part of the ladies had been the successful bring and buy stall. The club had paid its way and had more than justified its existence. Thanking the members, committee and executive particularly the secretary Mr. O. Hayward, for their co-operation and others who had given ready assistance, Mr. Cubitt made an earnest appeal for enthusiastic support of the club thus adding strength to the party. He regretted the necessity for his retirement for health reasons. The balance-sheet snowing a sound and strengthened position was considered most satisfactory. Mrs. Hayward as convener of the House Committee presented her report and was warmly commended. Officers were elected lor the ensuing year as follow:—President, Mr. 11. JScifert; vice-president, Mr. C. JS. Rawcliffe; committee, Mesdames BridenJones, Bradley, L. Bale, Misses M. Whiteside, Deroles and R. Davis, Mr. H. L. Hartog with power to co-opt.; auditor, Mr. E. B. Jennings. {Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. W. F. Field in her indisposition, the secretary to write expressing the hope that she would soon be restored to health. A welcome was extended to Miss M. Whiteside from Whakatane. Appreciation of the tine service rendered to the club by Mr. Cubitt as president for the past two years, was expressed by Mr. H. G. Mills and placed on record. Mr. Cubitt thanked the speaker and welcomed the new president. Mr. Seifert returned thanks for the honour conferred upon him remarking that as an ardent believer in the party he had accepted this office as being in the front line. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, ft sub-committee was set up to secure a secretary vice Mr. C. Hayward who has resigned office and a successor hostess to Mrs. Hayward who has joined the W.A.A.C’s.
