At yesterday 'a meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, the chairman (Mr. J. Boyce) made feeling reference to tho loss suffered by Mr. and Mrs. Neil Campbell iu tho death of their son, Dr. Campbell, on active service. A resolution of sympathy was carried in silence. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last evening congratulated Mr. A. J. Graham on having completed last week, 50 years of business iu the city. The whole of the time he has been with Leary’s Pharmacies, Ltd. Mr. Graham is a past president of the Chamber and also an ex-Mayor of the city. ’■* The death occurred in Wellington last. Friday of Mr. J. 11. McAlister, who for many years was private secretary to various Cabinet Ministers. The late Mr. McAlister was born iu Limerick, Ireland, in 1854, and was educated at Dublin University. Ho came to New Zealand in the early seventies and in 1878 married Constance Alma, daughter of W. Stanton, of Nelson. His wife predeceased him in IO3G. Mr. McAlister’s first years in New Zealand were spent as a journalist on the West Coast. Later he joined the staff of Brandon’s (now Brandon, Ward, Hislop and Powlcs). He was also on the Hansard staff, and eventually entered tho Civil Service, serving as secretary to the Rt. Hon. R. J. Secldon, Sir J. G. Ward, R. MacKenzie, W. Herries, Sir. Wm. Fraser, Sir Francis Dillon Bell, Sir A. P. Ngata, and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates.
