New Zealand’s War Effort Praised in U.S.

WASHINGTON, Mar. 6. The chairman of the United State* House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Senator Sol Bloom, said that New Zealand’s casualties, to the end of October, were 20,331; or the equivalent to an American army of 13,000,000, in addition to a Home Guard equivalent of 8,000,000. New Zealand troops had fought ii Greece, Crete, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, and New Zealand airmen had operated in the Solomons, Europi and England. New Zealand’s taxation was very high and New Zealand civilians itinted themselves of a number of foodstuffs in order to supply the Americans. All this was done without grumbling. New Zealand, in 1942, supplied America with half as much mutton or reverse lend-lease as America lend-leased to all other countries, and altogether had made, for its size, one of the greatest contributions to the war effort.
