Caravan Dwellers
Many people are living in caravans in Sydney suburbs because of the housing shortage. The demand for caravans to rent had Increased by 30 per cent., said Mr. R. J. Rankin, managing director of the Caravan Lettings Prop., Ltd., Sydney recently. “The rental works out to about 35s or £2 a week, and there are special camping areas at Matraville, Kingsford and Botany,” he said. “In this way people working in the city can be as near as possible to their jobs.” “Many 0 f our caravans are on permanent hire to munition workers, and have been since the war started. They want to live in on the job, and find a caravan is the simplest and cheapest way. “The breaking-up of homes through the war lias also done much to influence the demand for caravans,” he added. “I don’t think I would ever like to go back to boarding or a flat,” .said Mrs. G. Davis, who lives with her husband in a caravan at Matraville. “We are close to my husband’s work, and we really have everything we want here. Wc’vc even got a little vegetable garden, although I call it more of a salad, it’s so small,” she said. “We’ve got tomatoes, lettuces, beans a little parsley. Living in a caravan is a lot healthier than living in a flat,” she added.
