Pretest Against Closing Of Maori Boys’ College

Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 23. “I believe that the Maori youth of this country are being victimised educationally,” declared the Rev. R. W. Mayson, of Oamaru, at the session of the Methodist Conference in Christchurch, when protesting against the closing of a college for Maori boys in the North Island. The college, which was controlled by the Methodist Church, is being used as a military hospital. ‘‘At least two-thirds of the Maori colleges have beer, closed, and I do not think it is right,” he added. “It is a great pity that the Church did not fight strongly against closing this college.” Defending the policy of the college authorities, Mr. J. Tyler, of Auckland, said: “The military had made up their minds that the college was the best place for their purpose, and we thought, it best to let them have it and to make the best terms we could. I do not think that if we had protested it would have helped us one bit.”
