Solomons Struggle Still in Doubt

Terrific sea and air battles in the Solomons continue. It is still too early to get a clear picture, and the outcome is still uncertain.

Two Japanese destroyers have been sunk and at least three other warships, including a battleship and aircraft-carrier, have been damaged. Japanese troops pierced the American lines guarding the Guadalcanar airfield on Monday but were thrown back and the positions restored. These newest developments are announced in a United States Navy communique which followed a warning by the Navy Secretary (Colonel Knox) that the Japanese have a lot of strength in the Solomons and it is a tough and stiff fight with the outcome not yet clear,
