River Crossing Tragedy
WOMAN DROWNED; HUSBAND MISSING Per Press Association NELSON, Oct. 28. Airs. Reginald Thurlow, of Longford, Murchison, was drowned in the Buller river this morning, and it is feared that Air. Thurlow also lost his life when the cable anchor of a chair on which they were crossing the river gave way. During the morning, Air. C. Alain, a farmer on the Longford side of the river, noticed that the cable anchor had broken and that the chair haJ fallen into the river. Fearing that an accident had happened when Air. Thurlow was bringing his cream cans across, lie telephoned Air. Thurlow's house, but could get no reply. He immediately investigated and found that Thurlow had brought only one of hia usual two cans across. Later Mrs. Thurlow’s body was recovered from the water, but no trace was found of Mr. Thurlow, and It is feared he was also on the chair when the cable anchor pulled out. The chair crossed the Duller river on a cable about 50 feet above water from the Thurlow's to Main's property.
