Totals .... 499,798* 444.703 55,0955 RICHARDS NEARS ARCHER'S TOTAL Thousands of pounds in bets are involved in a controversy whether the jockey Gordon Richards will this season beat Fred Archer’s total of winning rides, says the Daily Mail. Archer’s aggregate was at first believed to be 2746 winners, but Ruff’s Guide gave the total as 271 S and now, after further research, gives Archer’s total as 2749. Richards has thus far in 1942 ridden 63 winners; bringing his total to 2739. Thus, with three more racing fixtures within the next nine days involving 18 possible mounts, Richards needs to ride eight, ten, or eleven winners, and a pretty dispute is likely if he succeeds in eight. One bookmaker has £IO,OOO involved in his bet on the figure of 2746 u.

(Plus Sales Tax.) AWAPUNI SUCCESSES AT TRENTHAM Horses trained for Mr. G. M. Currie by G. W. New at Awapuni, won two races on the second day at Trentham and with minor place money won on the first and second days, Mr. Currie was third on the list of winning owners with £620. The winners were Rink and Stairway, while Stairway (first day) and Damask secured second place money. G. W. New was the only trainer to lead in two winWINNING JOCKEYS Successes in the saddle were well distributed, the Riccarton horseman, Ci T. Wilson (Pallid and Soncy) and the Awapuni apprentice, C. A. Bowry (Stairway and Rink) being the only horsemen to salute the judge twice in the two days. Single wins went to E. Temperton (Student Prince), B. H. Morris (Boulder Dam), V. Sellars (lvar), P. Atkins (Centrepoise), J. Garth (Poutatau), T. Green (Coronace), C. Burgess (Siglow), P. Spratt (Tutere), A. E. Ellis (Kindergarten), A. Messervy (Islam), W. J. Broughton (Gayest Son), and W. Hooton (Ne-enah). MAKING GOOD PROGRESS L. G. Morris and G. W. New, who were injured when returning from Trentham on Monday evening, are making satisfactory progress toward recovery. “Snow” Morris was confined to bed with three ribs broken and a nose injury, but yesterday morning he was feeling well enough to be up and about. George New is in a private hospital and the extent of his injuries is not yet known. He has a cut on the forehead, he is bruised a good deal and his ribs have been knocked about. The most recent report about him was to the effect that he had spent a comfortable night.
