London By-election Favours Government

Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. LONDON, May 10. The Putney by-election resulted Linsteed (Government) 8788, Ackworth (Independent) 2939. Twenty-three per cent, of the electorate voted. The by-election was the result of the death of Mr. Marcus Samual. The Sunday Times, in a leader, says: “The whole question of the choice of candidates needs to be reconsidered. The prime object ought to be to secure men whose opinions and personality will bring new quality into the Commons.” Mr. Linsteed is secretary of the Pharmaceutical Association. They were yarning about tobacco in the smoke-room of an Auckland Club the other night. A well-known doctor startled everybody by declaring that sopie brands were about as dangerous as dynamite, and mentioned the case of a man who had consulted him some time before for bad throat trouble. “I asked him,” said the d-octor, “what brand of tobacco he used. But there are only five brands of the real thing, remember— Pocket Edition, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold.
