Increase in Price of Beer

An increase in the retail price of beer of Id a measure, but in respect of bottled beer and ordinary riggers of 4d a reputed quart bottle and 2d a reputed pint bottle are authorised by the Price Tribunal, according to an announcement made by it to-day. Riggers holding an Imperial quart will bear an increase of 4id. The increase will operate in respect of all sales from and including Monday next. The tribunal states that, as a result of the new basic rate of excise duty of 3s a gallon and the raising of the sales tax from 10 to 20 per cent, it had been decided that, after allowing for the savings in brewery costs, the price to the retail reseller would De substantially higher than before, and consequently the increase in prices mentioned above had been agreed upon. Tame Tuis “ Around the township of Warkworth there are a. number of small areas of natural bush which have been preserved by the owners,” writes Mr. E. T. Frost, the representative of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, at Kaitaia. In these remnants of the bush there are numbers of tuis “which have become so used to human society that they can be approached to within a few feet.” He saw as many as a dozen at one time on a couple of pohutukawas, and states that the tuis have been observed to “nest in gardens in close proximity to the houses of their hosts* 7 *
