Men Who Are 45 Years Old

MANPOWER OBLIGATIONS The question whether a man who was 45 years of age when called up for Territorial service and attained his 46th birthday Defore being due to enter camp was still liable for service was raised at a sitting of the No. 6A Manpower Committee in Palmerston North on Wednesday. Mr. J. A. Grant, who appeared for the reservist, said that the latter was liable for service when called, and if the war continued for another 20 years he would still be liable for service, under the present regulations. The chairman (Mr. T. L. Seddon) said that this was a weakness in the regulations and he had drawn the attention of the authorities to it.

Mr. Grant asked that an appeal of status be also included in the terms of the appeal, and the Crown representative (Mr. H. J. Worthington) objected. Considerable argument ensued on the matter between the chairman and Mr. Grant, the latter stating that there was a considerable lack of co-ordination on such matters throughout New Zealand.
