Married Men’s Ballot Early Next Year

x SINGLE MEN FIRST Per Press AssociationWELLINGTON, Nov. 6. The present indications are that the ballot for married men, either for Territorial or overseas service, will not be necessary before next year. This was indicated by the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple, to-day, when asked if he could give any indication as to when the first ballot for married men for overseas might take place.

Mr. Semple said that under normal circumstances it would probably be necessary to take a ballot for married men towards the end of January, or early in February, 1942, but it was too early yet to say when the first Gazette calling up married men for overseas service would be issued. As far as possible married men would be called for overseas service about five or six months before they normally would be required to enter camp, so that ample time would he given to put their affairs in order before proceeding overseas. Before married men were called up, added the Minister, a thorough review would be made of all single men whose service had been postponed. “Appeal boards have already commenced review* at approximately six-monthly intervals,” he said.
