Like Giant Tooth Brashes

Oiie of New Zealand’s rarest plants, Xeronema, was described by Miss Lucy Cranwell, botanist on the .staff of the Auckland Institute and Museum, when addressing the Auckland Botary Club. The discovery of the existence of the plant was made as late as 1924 by Mr. W. Fraser, of Whangarei, during a visit to the Poor Knights Islands. The only other place in New Zealand rvhere it grows. is on Hen Island, to the south of the former group. Miss Cranwell described it as a member of the lily family, similar to a small flax bußh in appearance, with leaves 2ft to 2}ft high. Above the leaves the flower stalks protrude. The flowers grow on one side of the stalk, producing the effect of giant red tooth brushes. The plant contains over 200 flowers. The plant has been grown successfully on the mainland by Mrs. A. B. Pickmere, of Whangarei. The only known related species has been found in New Caledonia.
