Canadian Afternoon at League of Mothers

The decorations were a feature of the November meeting of tho Palmerston North branch of the League of Alothers which was ‘‘Canadian” afternoon held yesterday at the Empire Hall. The stage was gay with tall vases of pink broom and wygelia a bowl of ranunculus adorning tho president’s table, whilo mixed flowers centred the tables in the hall.

Airs. W. M. Garner presided over a largo attendance and offered a cordial welcome to members and visitors, associated with her being the secretary (Airs. E. W. Drake.) Offers of help to service the A.N.A. Club on the week-end of November 28, 29 and 30 were solicited.

There was an impressive admission service conducted by Airs. Garner who first enumerated the aims and objects of the league and expressed the hope that the new members would enjoy the fellowship. During the admission those present sang the League Hymn led by Airs. Lyon, Mrs. W. H. Boon at the piano. The new members were Mesdames A. J. Newman, E. H. Rogers, J. Hebberley and G. H. Powell.

Notification was given that mothers with sons overseas or in camp would be the guests of the branch at a social afternoon, a general invitation being extended. The suggestion was put forward that members should bring little gifts each month in preparation for the next servicing of the patriotic shop. Entertainment appropriate to tho afternoon was presented, the choir, led by Airs. Lyon, singing “O Canada” and “The Canadian Boat Song”; Aliss AI. Cranston telling humorous stories. Mrs. H. Drake gave a Canadian recipe, and Airs. Boyes, the happy thought. Visitors introduced to the gathering were Rev. W. AI. Garner, Mr. Lyon and Mr. Williams of the Mildmay Alission who, at short notice, took the place of the speaker arranged.

At tho outset Air. Williams voiced appreciation of the warmth of the welcome accorded him. He then proceeded r'o tell his audience something of the origin of tho Mildmay Mission in London and its aim, tho evangelisation of the world. The first plank was missionary zeal, the speaker said, and tho mission working through existing organisations. There were representatives in various parts of the world to make surveys and where the need arose societies provided the men and Alildmay the money. This was the work they were seeking to do. Air. Williams described the trip taken from England by members of the missi-oi and their flight across war-tom Europe, over Iraq where Babylon and other places mentioned in the Bible were visited. The party continued across India where missionary stations were visited and where there was a tremendous need and so few to meet it, also across Burma to Borneo giving glimpses of the progress of missionary work. Air. Williams made an earnest plea for something more to bo done to make Christ known and to assist in transforming the power of the Gospel which was the grace of God.

The vote of thanks to the speaker was conveyed by Airs. C. Grieg, Airs. Garner adding thanks to the performers, tea hostesses and garden circle members and others who had assisted with the afternoon.
