Russian Railways Stand Test
Received Wednesday, 9.20 p.m. MOSCOW, Aug. 12. Twenty million roubles hive been handed to the National Defence Fund as the result of a “free" day’s work by Soviet railwaymen and their families. Over J,300,000 workers gave one Sunday to assist tho railways for which they took no pay'. Many observers thought communications would prove the weakest link in Soviet defence. Official quarters admit i that the railways were subjected to a ! severe strain in the first days of the I war but they stood the test. Large ! numbers of maintenance men are j always stationed ready to repair the track at any point. As a result there | has been no serious hold-up on the vital lines. 1 Furthermore, a vast quantity of rolling stock was brought back from Western Russia and the Baltic States. Railwaymen before abandoning any soction always destroy the operative parts, also any equipment they are unable to bring away*
