KOPUTAROA There was a large attendance at the August meeting. Mrs. S. C. Chapman presided and aftor the business was concluded Mrs. Noel Thompson gave a very interesting travel talk describing in particular the Middle Eastern ports that our soldiers now know. There was a very satisfactory number of entries in the competition for an attractive and economical cake, the winner being Mrs. Kernohan, .while Mrs. Brown was second. The best bloom was won by Mrs. Pemberton, while Mrs. Chapman won a social competition. Members in charge of the bring and buy stall returned the very satisfactory amount of £1 7s. KAIRANGA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY The ninth birthday of the Kairanga Women’s Institute was celebrated by the staging of a ball which proved quito as popular as any held, previously. Members devoted several hours of Tuesday morning to the preparations and decorating of tho hall and tables, and a novel feature was the placing of largo Vs. in patriotic colours around the walls. Dance music was provided by a professional orchestra and a pleasant interlude in the dancing programme was tho presentation of a play “They Wanted a Tragedy” by the P.D.C. players who were as follows: —Misses O’Keefe, Carr, NT. Tin-gey, Hayser, G. Tingcy, Davey, Spencer and Mr. I. Stewart. Another item was the rendering of a bracket of songs bv Mrs. Funnel. The ceremony of cutting the birthday cake was held prior to .supper, Mrs. Davey, the women’s institute president, offered a welcoming and extended her thanks to those who had given assistance, particularly to Mrs. Meagers, who had donated the cake ingredients to Mrs. McClelland for the baking of it and to Mrs. L. Clark who had decorated it. Visiting presidents who conveyed their congratulations and assisted in the cutting of the cake were Mrs. Poananga and Mrs. T. Rowlands, the latter presenting a posy to Mrs. Davey. A number of novelty dances were held and were won as follows:—Gay Gordons, Miss J. Davey and A. Gee; Lucky Spot, Mrs. Pedersen and Miss J. Green. Patrons enjoyed dancing till an early hour.
