Pretty Evening Wedding At All Saints’ Church

ASHBY—FIELD A wedding of considerable local interest was solemnised at All Saints ’ Church, Palmerston North, on the evening of July 9, when Ethel Christabel, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. \y. F. Field, of Kongopai Street, was marriel to Noel Alfred Ashby, R.N.Z.A.F., Ohakea, elder son of Air. and Airs. N. P. Ashoy, of Nelson. Rev. Canon G. Y. Woodward was the officiating clergyman, and the wedding music was played by Air. J. Holmes liuunicles. Friends of the bride had decorated the church with large bowls of camellias and spring flowers. These and tiny posies with tulle bows, which marxed the guest pews, formed an attractive setting. Owing to the illness of her lather, the brine was given in marriage by her brother, Mr. K. W. Field, of Aokautere, and she made a charming picture in her gown of richly brocaued parchment satin. Fashioned on classic lines, the wedding frock featured an unusual neckline, softly draped to give fullness to the bodice; the long tapering sleeves were finished with tiny covered buttons, while the skirt, of ground length, fell in graceful panels to give fullness at the hemline. Tne veil, lent 'by her sister, .Mrs. L. Rix, was of filmy tulle, which fell to form a train, and was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom, which had been worn by tne bride s mother on her wedding day. Her only ornament was a silver-mounted cameo brooch, a family heirloom, the cameo being made from the lava of Alt. Y'esuvius and brought many years ago to New Zealand by a relative of tne bride’s father. A sheaf of cream camellias, heather and cyclamen, with maidenhair fern and cream satin ribbons, completed a cnarming toilette. in attendance were two bridesmaids, Miss Betty Soar, of Taumarunui, and Mrss Enid Orr, of Aokautere. Their frocks, in lovely shades of maize ami green taffeta, respectively, were made on simpie Hues with very full gored skirts, bodices with gathered fullness in front, and sashes to tie in large bustle

oows. Tiny covered buttons finished the trout, xrom kign neckline to waist. Luusuai and very effective Dolly Yarden nats of gold were worn, eacn being trimmed witu a small posy of real spring flowers in the centre of a tulle bow to match their frocks and they were hold in place by a band of mat cuing velvet ribbon. Gold sandals were worn and each maid carried a posy of spring flowers in shades of maize, with

couenes of green, and gold frills and streamers.

Air. G. Ashby, of Nelson, brother of the bridegroom, was best man, and Air. M. Seay, the bride’s cousin, of the ix.N.Z.a.f., Uhakea, was groomsman. During the signing of the marriage register, Master Earl Andrews gave a beautiful rendering of the hymn, “Oh ror the Wings of a Dove." un leaving the church the bride was presented with a lucky horseshoe by her small nephew, blaster Unristopner jffix.

Following the ctfremony at the church a reception was held at the Kosco tearooms, wnere the bride’s mother received her guests, numbering one hundred, attireu in a smart irocji of biaca and Marina striped marocam, with biack coat and nat, and sne also wore a spray of violets ana winter roses, She was assisted by the bridegroom ’a mother, Mrs. N. G. Ashby,, who wore a tailored costume ox grey with pinstripes of deep cyciahienr snade, and nat ana accessories to tone, tier spray was of cream and wine, coloured cyclamen. Mrs. A. Cawood, the bridegroom’s grandmother, who had travelled from Christchurch to attend tho wedding, wore a black wool lace frock, and musqmtsh coat, adorned with a beautiful spray of violets. The bride's two Sisters, Mrs. J. C. Riddle and Mrs. E. ffix, assisted their mother at the reception, the former wearing a frock of cherry silk marocain and the latter a grey frock with biack edge-lto-cdge coat. Canon Woodward officiai.ed as toastmaster and the usual toasts were honoured in the customary manner. Buspended above the place of honour at the '' adding reception hung a very beautiful wouding oeii of all-white spring flowers, being a gift from a friend ox the jbride. Numerous telegrams were received from all parts of the Dominion, conveying congratulatory messages to tho bridal couple. They later mxi for New Plymouth and Auckland, where tho honeymoon was spent, tne bride travelling in a black coat, tailored on military lines and worn over a model truck. Her black hat featured a scarlet quill, and this touch of colour was repeated in a cosy woollen cravat. A black bag and suoes completed a smart outfit. Amongst the many beautiful presents received were gilts from the Aokautere Women’s Institute, the Palmerston North branch of tho Women’s Division, and the 4tli Auckland Lone Guide Company, of which the bride has been captam for several years. Mrs. Ashby will continue to reside with he; parents until such time as her husband receives notice of transfer.
