Nine-hour Fight to Save Torpedoed Ship
(British Official Wireless.) Received Tuesday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, July 29. A nine-hour fight by the crew of a torpedoed British merchantman to keep the vessel afloat is described by the captain. When the ship began to sink by the bows the captain tried to save her by steaming full-speed nstern, but water flooded the stokehold and the plan had to be abandoned. A destroyer came along and request ®d the captain to abandon ship, but he refused. The destroyer returned later after hunting the U-boat and unsuccessfully attempted to tow the merchantman, but she was too low in the water. The captain finally decided that it was impossible to save his ship and, with three of the crew who refused to leave him, was rowed to the destroyer and eventually landed at his home port.
