BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ AGRICULTURAL CLUBS

Manawatu-Oroua Division

The annual report of the Manawatu-Oroua Division of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club movement states that in the root crop section 38 schools in the district took part, bringing forward 233 projects for judging in February, March and April of this year. This is very close to the record number, 239, produced in 1940, and would probably have greatly exceeded that number but for the long dry summer which ruined many plots—particularly on the lower levels. The compulsory crops were: Carrots, two varieties, and silver beet. The three extra rows provided by the entrants themselves were of a wide and pleasing selection. The children showed considerable discernment in the choice of crops. Unfortunately, as stated before, the long hot dry spell in summer was unfavourable to root crop growing in many areas and the children are to be congratulated for having persisted as they did, and for bringing forward plots as good as circumstances would permit and the judges feel that probably a new insight into cultivation values was gained from the struggle against adverse conditions. The year by year improvement still goes on, pupils gaining from sheer own. experience and showing a keen appreciation of the judges’ remarks and of all points connected with the actual judging. Thinning, in many cases, is still a fault, and children find it hard to pull out, and discard, what are to them perfectly good plants, but weeds become progressively fewer and soil cultivation is improving. Records in most schools were well done, their value being appreciated, but there is still room for improvement in this department of the work. The educational value of the record cannot be overstressed. The judges still feel that although the plot work occupies a large part of their time, that it is time well spent, and recommend that the work be continued. Perhaps more schools might be able to arrange to have all their together in the school grounds, which would make for less travelling and easier judging. Thanks are due to all the local supervisors, to the parents and to teachers for their interest in and support of the movement, without which so successful a year.could not have been accomplished. N.Z. Farmers’ Union Challenge Shield (awarded to school in Wanganui Education District securing highest marks for Cultivation and Record) — I, Otoko School, Wanganui; 2, Pohangina School, Manawatu. This year 39 schools took part in the stock-rearing competitions and brought forward for judging the remarkable total of 544 animals, the highest in the history of the clubs in the areas exceeding last year’s total (456) by 88. In addition to the above, 73 lambs were presented by children in places where dairy calves were unobtainable . Although the club work is concerned primarily with dairy stock the educational value gained from the study of sheep husbandry must not be under-estimated, particularly in those districts where dairy stock is not readily available. Sincere thanks are offered to the following, who often at great inconvenience to themselves acted as judges: Messrs. A. Burgess, Rongotea; H. J. Lancaster, Glen Oroua- H. E. Green, Kairanga; N. Wilson, Kairanga,* J. H. Mason, Feilding; L. Lancaster, Kopane; A. A. O’Donnell; Bunnythorpe; H. D. Brewster, Makino; and W. Davison, Rongotea. We wish also to thank all those teachers, parents, Young Farmers- Club members and others who so generously supported the movement throughout the year. The district championship was held in connection with the FeilUing A. & P. Association’s Annual Show on the sth February. Mr. Martin Murray of Woodville officiated as judge of the Jersey classes, and in the care of rearing, while Mr. J. H. Mason of Feilding, judged the Shorthorn group. There were very good entries from a wide area, and a very high quality.
