Wanganui Education Board

MONTHLY MEETING Mi*. E. F. Hemingway presided at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday, others present being Messrs. N Annabell, W. H. Brown, P. Munro, J. Batchelar, I. W. 'Mudford and J. Batt. Works Completed The architect, Mr. E. R. Hodge, reported the following works completed: j Colyton.—The whole of the ashphalt area has been curbed with concrete and | channelling and arrangements have I been made with the County Council to I carry out the necessary asphalt work. Rangiwahia.—The' whole of the painting work in connection with the manual training centre and the recently erected fence as been completed. Linton.—The work in connection with the erection of a swimming pool has been completed. There are, however, certain complications which have arisen ‘in connection with this contract which have yet to be smoothed out before any payments are made. Tapuae.—Minor repairs have been effected to the building and the exterior and interior of the school building pianted, together with the exterior of all outbuildings. Intermediate School, Palmerston N.— The whole of the equipment intended for this school is now completed. New gas mains have been run to give additional pressure to all gas fittings, as has been provided to the woodwork and metalwork rooms. Awahuri.—Minor repairs have been , effected to the teacher’s residence. Newbury.—Additional comforts have been provided to the teacher’s residence by the installation of a wardrobe and a drying cupboard. The board fencing has been straightened up and general repairs effected thereto. Apiti.—ln the infant department of the main school- the stepped floors have been removed. Foxton.—Fencing of the two road lines of the recently acquired Claris property has been completed. Shifting of the old disused outbuilding has been arrarnged for. . Oroua Downs.—The asphalt basketball area, toward which the board provided a subsidy, has been completed. Colyton.—Re-papering and re-decor-ating of the interior of the teacher’s residence throughout has been completed. Cheltenham.—The papering of two rooms and painting of the bathroom interior # has been completed. Terrace End.—Minor repairs have been effected to a number of desks and chairs. Whakarongo. —A new sink has been installed in the kitchen of the teacher’s residence. Works in Hand Apiti.—The work in connection with the erection of the new building is, with the exception of painting, nearing completion, and it is hoped that the next three weeks will see the building ready for occupation. The two extensions to the manual training building, which is to provide additional accommodation for cookery and woodwork, has, with the exception of painting, been completed and may be occupied. The erection of a tool and fuel sued and general repairs to fencing and to the main building are in hand. Oroua Downs. —Tne work in connection with the extensions to the main building, comprising one classroom and service cornuor, is also nearing completion with the exception ox the painting. The painting worh, unfortunately, is held up because ox the suortage of labour anu inaoility to arrange xor any local contractor to undertake the work. The shelter shed has been suixted to a new position ana re-esta unshed, as nas also various lixtures of playground apparatus. Waitoni. —General repairs to the buildings are being effected. Kuiranga.—An extension to the teachers residence is Deing carried out to give greater dimensions to the kitchen, an electric range is Deing installed and the cupDoard accommouution improved. Beaconsfield.—Painting and repairs to tae senool, residence and outbuildings is in hand, togetner with the repapering of two rooms. iTalcomoe. —ltoad line fencing of the new school area is nearing completion Hiwinui. —Arrangements have been made for an immediate commencement with the painting of the school, residence and outbuildings. Rangiotu. —Repairs are being effected to the teacner’s residence. Glen Oroua. —Arrangements have been made for the immediate carrying out of improvements to the lighting of the senior room. Rongotea.—A complete overhaul of the hot water heating system is in hand. Manual Training uentre (Palmerston North). —General repairs to the buildings in preparation for painting are in hand. West End. —The installation of two washhand basins is in hand. Proposed for Ensuing Month - Linton. —To arrange for a start with the extensions to the school building. Waituna West. —To re-line the classroom to a height of 6ft. with wallboard to elminate draughts. Maintenance. —To effect maintenance to those buildings adjacent to centre? where new building works are in pro gress and to arrange paintiug work where labour is available or for which tenders have or can be accepted. H. lugram, domestic science instructress, Palmerston North. .War appointment: Mr. E. G. Schwarz, assistant master, Ilokowhitu; Miss E. C. Mullon, secondary assistant, Marton District High. General j Apiti District High School.—The Department notified approval of a subsidy for the erection of a swimming pool. College Street.—The architect reported that he saw no need for the removal . of the pine trees on the extension of I 1 the school grounds. Intermediate (Palmerston North).— The Department wrote declining the application for a grant toward an intercommunication system between classIrooms and the headmaster’s office.
