Palmerston North Hospital

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The June meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board was held yesterday, there being present: Mr. J. A. Nash (in the chair), Mrs. M. Aitchison and Messrs. V. E. Smith, J. 11. Williamson, J. Batchelar, C. P. Jensen, A. J. Gimblett, T. Green, G. A. Monk, W. Howell, M. E. Perreau, J. Boyce, D. Collis, A. E. Mansford and J. M.P. • A welcome was extended by the chairman to Mr. Gimblett, a new mem her of the board. The medical superintendent (Mr. J. H. North) reported that 395 patients had been admitted to the main hospital during May, as compared with 371 the previous month, the daily average number of occupied beds being 246, as against 235. Thirty patients were admitted to the maternity home, and there were 27 births. Throughout April and May the hospital had been very busy. The number of military patients admitted had been reduced over the last few weeks and it had been possible to admit a large number of waiting-list patients. Managing-Secretary’s Report. The managing-secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) reported as follows concerning building matters:— Centennial Hospital: Building work on the Centennial Hospital has progressed satisfactorily during the period. The concrete work up to and including the first floor slab is now completed. Animal house: The erection of the new animal house has been undertaken during the period and is now nearing completion. Additions to Nurses’ Home: The plans and specification were duly submitted to the Health Department. Some minor alterations were required. These involved slight alterations in the structural drawings which will be completed within the next few days. The plans then require to be finally approved by the Department before tenders are called. Outpatient and massage block: Draft sketches in connection with this matter have been prepared and a consultation with the oflicers of the Department has been held. We are at present awaiting written comments from the Department concerning the details of this proposal. Tutorial block: Draft sketch for the tutorial block has been submitted to the Department and we arc at present awaiting Departmental comments in connection with this matter also. Additions to buildings, Otaki torium: The work on the two shelters which have been removed has been completed and the shelters are in occupation. Detailed plans and specifications for the additional patients’ accommodation and the X-ray block have been submitted to The Department and we are awaiting Departmental comment a before the matter is finalised. Otaki Hospital: The alterations to the nursery at Otaki have been proceeding and are now nearing completion.
