RONGOTEA At the May meeting (Mrs. Churchill presiding) a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. Wood was passed, members standing in silence. Three new members were welcomed, Mesdames Armitage and Russell and Miss Marjory Dear. Mrs. Ron Aird gave a comprehensive report of the council meeting, and Mrs. W. Hurst gave the Golden Thread, extracts from a book by Lord Frederick Hamilton. , The programme included music and poems. Mrs. Aird delighted with her singing of “The Lass with the Delicate Air” and “Home, Bweet Home,” while the singing circle rendered a bracket of old Engiisfi. part songs. Miss Lily l’edley recited “My England' 7 and Mrs. Churchill gace “A Petition” by Vernede. The programme concluded with pianoforte duets by English composers played by Mesdames W. Hurst and Churchill. A wonderful exhibition of old English possessions was on view, members giving the history of each article, -A. band-made wateb was of particular interest, being 300 years old. All manner of quaint pieces of china from 100 to 300 years old, an Anglican Church Bible printed in 1771, a christening mug 100 years old, a tiny copper kettle, a Hollow glass rolling-pin. and very many other treasures were displayed. Members busily knitted throughout the afternoon and a large number of peggy squares were handed in, Resides a finished quilt which had beeu knitted and made up by Mrs. J. Wheeler. Twelve members signified their intention of availing themselves of the proposed trip by the Institute Travel Club. Mrs. Will gained first and second for chrysanthemums and Mrs. Wheeler third j band-sewn buttonhole, Mrs. Will 1 and 2, Mrs. W. Hurst 3. The president expressed sympathy with Miss E. Hunt, who is suliering from ill-health, and also with Mrs. li. IScotit, who has two children at present in hospital. HALCOMBE At the May meeting Mrs. R. Williams presided. Mrs. A. Bcnaeren and Miss Edna Fergusson undertook the duties of “Sunshine” members for the coming month. Mrs. N. Ashworth gave a full report ou the council meeting held recently in Feilding. It was decided to pack and forward five soldiers’ parcels to Zone E headquarters. The afternoon took the form of a social “Next-of Kin” afternoon, when several visitors were welcomed. Mrs. Te Funga read an interesting letter received from her son, Captain P. Te Punga, w r ho member of the Maori Rattaliofi overseas. Mrs. Curtis rendered two solos, Miss Dawn Managh obliged with a toe dance, and duets weer sung by Miss Patricia and Mastes Rees Williams. Many souvenirs received from the boys in the Middle East were displayed by members. The hostesses for next month will bo Mesdames L. FergUsson, J. L. Fergusson and D. C. Managh. The competitions resulted: Baby singlet, Mrs. L. Davies 1, Mrs. A. Scliaeren 2, Mrs. F. Brett 3. These singlets were afterwards forwarded to the Plunket Society. Three parsnips, Miss Edna Fergusson 1, Mrs. A. Schacren 2, Mrs. J. O’Sullivan 3. The competitions for June will be for the best bloom and something new from something old, and Mrs. SporJe will give a demonstration on quilt making. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames A. Ward, A. McNau and N. Anderson.
