Both Sides Claim Successes
Received Tuesday, 1.35 a.ra. CHUNGKING, May 12. It is officially stated that the Chinese frustrated the Japanese rush wsetward from the Peipiug-Hankow railway, killing 3000 Japanese in a battle ninety miles north of Hankow. Japanese bombers attacked the Burma Road bridges on Sunday. A k-banghai message says Japanese dispatches from the fchansi-Honan border claim that the Chinese Third and Eighth Armies are largely disorganised and are attempting to reform their lines in tho mountains of north-western Shansi just north of the Yellow River. Tho Jepanese claimed the capture of Shao>uan which is the base of the Fortieth Army in southern Shansi.
