Good Effort by Chat Over the Country HORSES AND ENGAGEMENTS FOR WAVERLEY A. M. Wright has transferred his team from Woodville and the appearance of his horses added quite a lot of interest to the track work yesterday morning. The horses are Chat, winner of last year’s Wellington Steeplechase, Raana, Haile Selassie, Game Pit, Hunter’s Eye and a Croupier-Rag Fair four-year-old.

The conditions were perfect and Chat, out in the centre, was given a searching work out over the country. She jumped soundly, wasting little or no time over the fences, and she negotiated six brush fences, four posts and rails and two hen-coops. She never put a foot wrong and there was plenty of pace on all the way. Raana, also ridden by M. Wright, was

schooled over six hurdles. There was little pace on and he jumped carefully. Bridgcgroom (J. K. Searle) and High Peer (J. Williamson) galloped six on the plough and Bridegroom was in front at the post after running the distance in 1.23 J.

Riotous was given a similar work out but ho was not asked to better than even time. Aurora’s Star (Williamson) was just in front of Selkirk (W. J. Broughton) at the end of a mile run in 1.49 4-5, and it was an attractive effort on the part of Selkirk. On the course proper Newbury Queen (G. R. Tattersall) was not under pressure in running five in I.S. Softer going will be more to her liking. Ringless (Broughton) was on the bit in a similar task which took 1.10 3-5. Fly-by-Night (Fagan) scampered easily over three in 39 4-5, and Rangitikei (Searle) and a companion covered half a mile in 54. Felician showed pace in a three-furlong sprint, the last two taking 25 3-5. This youngster can gallop. Taitama (F. Buchanan) was in front of Squcers (Broughton) at the end of five cut out in 1.5 4-5, Taitama going well. Squeers could .have done better. Courting (J. Bowness) covered five in 1.6. Clarion Call (B. H. Morris) was exercised, and so were Euatiti, Tail Light, Old Bill and Quadroon, but Goldbridge (Tattersall) and Kenascor (Morris) were sprinted four in 53 4-5. Corroboree was schooled and so was Grateful, who was put over one of the brush fences on the Steeplechase course. E. W. Watson has taken in hand a likely looking youngster which will race in the colours of Mr. H. E. Fairey. It is a rising three-vear-old filly by Inflation from Cloudy Bay. She was bred by Mr. W. Crystalt and she is to be called “Thumbs Up.” RIDING ENGAGEMENTS FOR WAVERLEY ' Riding engagements for Waverley have been announced as under: P. Jarvis: High Fcer. A. Jenkins: Clarion Call. H. P. MAKING SATISFACTORY PROGRESS Eric Temperton cracked a collar-bone when Clarion Call tipped out with him at Awapuni last week but the bone is mending rapidly and Temperton hopes to bo back in saddle before the Otaki meeting.

AFTER THE DUCK There are some big fields at Waverloy to-morrow but it. is reported that some of the leading horsemen will not be sporting silk. Gum boots, heavy underclothes and waterproofs will bo more to their liking as they will be out before the ‘‘dirty Dawn.” hoping for a low ceiling and the dirty weather which makes all the difference when a man is out after duck. A REMARKABLE RECORD One of tko most remarkable accidents ever seen on a racecourse occurred at Plumptou (England). Roman Chief, ridden by B. Magee, in the Oucktield Steeplechase, was making his challenge at the final bend when he crashed into a motor car, knocked it over, and catapulted his jockey 20ft. into the air. Roman Chief, who was a good-class jumper, and considered to be worth several hundred pounds, broke his leg and was destroyed. Tvveedledee 11, the favourite, was racing just behind Roman Chief, and he missed Tunning into the vehicle by inches. Twcedledee II went on to win the race. THE LATEST DEVICE Many notable incidents have been associated with the Onkaparinga meeting, but none had such a melodramatic flavour as that of the Great Eastern Steeplechase on Easter Monday. As a result of an incident during the running of the Great Eastern, K .Parris (rider of Collegian) was disqualilied for six months, the allegation being that for portion of the last round he had leaned over and held on fo Dark David’s tail. Interviewed immediately after the race, L. Meenan, rider of Dark David, said his mount had jumped magnificently, but he felt him tiring over the last fence, and ho thought the gelding was feeling the strain of his weight. Later on a policeman on duty at the back of the racecourse reported to the starter that ho saw Collegian’s rider hanging on to Dark David’s tail, and the officer was advised to make his report to the Btewards. The policeman said that the crowd in the vicinity also saw the happening and called to Parris to release his hold. Evidence from Meenan was subsequently taken, and Parris was disqualified for improper practices. SAVED FOR STUD PURPOSES When the field was turning into the straight in the President’s Handicap at Riverton Silver Choir slipped and fell, breaking his off fore fetlock. Silver Choir, who is an Australian-bred stallion, was /accepted last season by the Remount Committee, and was mated with about 50 mares. His owner decided to have the injured leg put in plaster, with a view to keeping him for further stud duties.
