The Minister of Finance announces that Mr. W. F. Ward has been appointed acting-governor of the Reserve Bank from May 1 for three months, Mr. W. P. Rollings has been appointed as Victoria College council’s representative on the Massey Agricultural College Board of Governors in place of Mr. Levi.

Mr. A. E. Stone, headmaster of the Gonville School, Wanganui, will retire from the teaching profession after 40 years at the close of this school term. He intends to live at Auckland.

The appointment of Mr. R. P. Connell as fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture at Christchurch is announced. Mr. Connell succeeds Mr. E. McGillivray and will have jurisdiction over the Canterbury, West Coast, Marlborough and Nelson districts. His present position is land utilisation officer in the Department.

A motion expressing sympathy with the relatives of the late Sir Charles Luke was passed at the monthly executive meeting of th Palmerston North Returned Soldiers’ Association. The president (Mr. B. J. Jacobs) stated that Sir Charles Luke’s work on behalf of returned soldiers over a great number of years would always be gratefully remembered.

Mr. L. O. H. Tripp, has been appointed chairman of the executive of the National War Funds Council. The unflagging interest shown by Mr. Tripp in connection with patriotic bodies and Red Cross work over a period of 27 years was referred to a meeting of tho council, and assurance given that his so vices were fully appreciated by all rot.urned men.

Prior to his transfer to tho Wellington branch, Mr. W. G. Whitehouse, who has been a member of the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand at Palmerston North for the past 11 years, was farewelled by his follow officers recently. In making a presentation from the staff, of the bank, the manager, Mr. J. A. West, testified to the popularity and efficiency of Mr. Whitehouse and wished him success in his new sphere. The opportunity was also taken to farewell and make a gift to Mr. P. M. Priest, a member of tho bank staff, who has joined the New Zealand Navy.
