i ELECTION OP OFFICERS The annual meeting of the Woodville Croquet Club took place on. Saturday last, Mrs. Halpiu presiding over an excellent attendance of memoers. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, and both were considered to be very satisfactory. v The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. Haipin; vice- £ president, Mrs. Vv'hillans; secretary, ( Mrs. C. Smith; treasurer, Mrs. Whu- t lans; supervisor, Mrs. Jamieson; assist- | ant supervisor, Mrs. iiouten; referees, j Mesdames McCarthy, Kenyon and Hal- j pin. j It was decided to form a handicap ? games and greens committee, and the { following were elected to the position: Mesdames Kenyon, McCarthy, Jamieson, llalpin and Houten. Mrs. Halpiu was appointed press cor- ( respondent. The president, in a brief speech, made a presentation of a very pretty jug to the secretary, Mrs. C. Smith, who was also accorded three hearty cheers. The mem.Dersh.ip of the club has inc leased consideraoly since last year, and the new members are showing great enthusiasm. PRESIDENT’S REPORT The report of the Croquet Club president (Mi's. Haipin), submitted at the annual meeting of the club stated that the past eeasun has been one of the uest in the history of the club, both socially and financially. The club was fortunato in being udlg to send six players to the inter-ciub matches hold at Palmerston North for the association oanner. Although not gaining lirst place they were oy no means disgraced, uie players putting up a very creditable periormance. The members considered the time well spent, gaining quite a lot or experience in t*ie line points of croquet. Mesdames McCarthy, {Smith and Halpm entered in the {Southern xiawke’s Bay tournament held at Dannevirke in February. Although not getting into the linals they played some good games. Mrs. Haipin entered in me local tournament held at Waipukurau, getting into the semi-linals in the B cnampionship, but unfortunately had to leave beiore being finalised. On several occasions our members challenged for the Gilbert Hoops, out were unsuccessful. Mrs. Houten, one of our most promising players, was the only entrant from our club for the silver button matches held at Paluioraton •Norik. Mrs. Houten played very consistently and was oniy beaten on a small margin. Six members of the Pahiatua Club were the club’s guests on the greens and a very happy time was spent in friendly hour games. Pahiatua rociprocated when eight , Wood vine meuioers spent a whole day on their greens and were hospitably entertained to luncheon, morning and afternoofi tea. It was with deep regret

imat me club had to farewell one of its members, Mrs. Coatsworth, who has ieit the district. A very pleasant afternoon was the result. A presentation was made of a very pretty cup, piate anu saucer by Mrs. Wliitians vice-presi-dent;, little Yvonne Houten presenting Mrs. Coatsworth with a pretty llorai horsesnoc. The co-operation of memoers with tne Bowling Club members in a series ox euchre parties was well worth while and tne club owe a debt of gratitude to the bowlers for their very graceful gesture in giving us half oi me net proceeds. The club has commenced with me euchre again this season, and it is pleasing to note the good attendance and nappy atmosphere mat prevails at these xunctions. The members have entered wholeheartedly into the arranging and the running oj tne games, and a very pleasant time is anticipated. The cluo is not behind in helping anything connected with the war elfort, niemocrs being associated Witn nearly every organisation in tne district. * * Although wo have had a very happy season the members’ thoughts were ever present with tnose across the sea, in the great struggle which is raging in our ueioved Empire. We hope ana trust mat me time is not iar distant when peace will prevail, and the ireedom ior which so much has oeeil lost will be ours xor all time. A word of praise is due the caretaker (Mr. Gann;, who has oeeu most assiduous in keeping the greens in such splendid condition, and me general appearance of the surroundings. We nave a very ardent supporter in Mr. C. Smith, who has never tailed us when anythiug had to be done in connection with the greens. We

Smith the latter. Our best thanks arc due to those members who have kept tho pavilion and the surroundings so tidy. The greens were officially closed on*April lb, the members spending o delightful time in hour games. Several visitors wore present and a delicious afternoon tea was a feature of the afternoon. In a brief speech tho president (Mrs. Haipin;, amidst sighs of regret, declared the greens closed for the season. To the referees, to Mr. Offwood for kindly auditing the books, and to all members for their splendid co-operation during the past season, I tender my sincercst thanks.”
