Axis Farces Partly Occupy Greenland
WASHINGTON, April 23. The possibility that Axis foicci already partly occupy Greenland a. as disclosed with trunk surprise by President Roosevelt at his press conference to-day. The United States, said Mr. Roosevelt, was 4 ‘ doing something to counteract the Axis action,” aud he hoped there would be no further aggression. Greenland was the subject of an agreement reached earlier this month between tho United .States Government and the Danish Minister to Washington. Under this agreement tho United States undertook tne defence of Greenland in return for the use of bases there. Subsequently the Danish Government, under German pressure, repudiated the agreement and recalled the Minister, but the latter, backed by tho United States Government, ignored the recall order. Senator Josh Lee said: “If the Nazis aro in Greenland wo have got to throw them out.” Senator Brewster said: “I guess we are beginning to recognise the facts of life. ’ ’
