Roman Cathedral Destroyed in Air Raid

Received Thursday, 1.30 a.iu. LONDON, April 23. It is revealed that the Catholic cathedral of St. George’s at Southwark, was destroyed by fire in a recent raid. Priests and others climbed to the lofty roof of the sanctuary, but some incendiaries were beyond their reach. VV hen the fire forced them to descend they fought the flames inside tho cathedral until compelled to evacuate. The priests saved the sacrament. Soldiers and civilians carried out the vestments, plate, a marble crucifix from Pope Pius 9th, and a bronze crucifix from Napoleon’s chapel at Fontainebleau. The services are being continued in the adjoining hall. Tho death is announced of Mrs. Gertrude Drayton, as the result of recent enemy action. She organised the King George and Queen Elizabeth Club for’overseas servicemen, and was the mainspring of the Victoria League before the outbreak of war in organising hospitality for Dominion visitors.
