Teachers Serving In Home Guard
NOT FiNTITLED TO PAY WHEN ON LEAVE Per Prese Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 23. The fact that teachers serving with the Home Guard were not entitled to pay if they were granted leave to undertake duties was commented on by the Taranaki Education Board to-day when the amended schedule of leave pay for teachers on Territorial service wm received. A case was quoted where a teacher had sacrificed his pay and it was decided to bring the question before the Education Department. The Department stated that as a result of many teachers serving in Territorial training beyond the usual three months making application for additional holiday pay, the conditions of leave had been amended. In future teachers would receive pay for the first thieo months, but if after that period the authorities required teachers to remain on military service they were to be treated in a similar manner to those serving overseas and with the forces. If these teachers were bkely to be required for a year or longer, their positions might be advertised as vacancies. Where teachers voluntarily wished to continue service, the bosrfla would take into account the needs m their schools when considering application for extended leave and might ra fuse to grant the extension.
